2021 Civil Engineer of the Year

Carrie Nicholson is an advocate for civil engineers and the civil engineering industry. In celebration of the industry’s past, she helps plan for its future. Carrie impresses on current and next-generation engineers what extraordinary achievements civil engineers have accomplished and what exciting opportunities exist ahead of them. Similarly, she educates policymakers about the benefits of supporting and collaborating with the industry.


Carrie has been an active ASCE volunteer since while an undergraduate. Thereafter, Carrie was a Maryland Section President and a charter member and leader for Maryland’s Geo and Utility Engineering & Surveying Institutes. She has presented at several Maryland Section meetings, Region events, and the Multi-Region Leadership Conference. Carrie led the effort for both of Maryland’s Infrastructure Report Cards (2011 and 2020). She serves on the Region 2 Board of Governors. A former member of its constituent State Government Relations and Grassroots Committee, Carrie is a member of the Society’s Public Policy and Practice Committee and has been Maryland’s state lead at the Legislative Fly-In for the past five years.


Carrie is also an American Society of Highway Engineers volunteer serving as the Chesapeake Section’s President for 2021-2022, Maryland Engineering Challenges volunteer, Maryland Quality Initiative outreach Career Day presenter, Habitat for Humanity of the Chesapeake Red Hat, Gunpowder Valley Conservancy tree planting Crew Chief, and former Bridges to Prosperity project organizer and consultant.


Carrie is owner and President of Accurate Infrastructure Data, Inc. (dba A | I | DATA), a subsurface utility engineering and land surveying firm. She earned her bachelor’s degree in civil engineering from Lehigh University, her Master of Engineering from the University of Maryland, and her MBA from Norwich University.
