Alyssa S. Sooklal, P.E.
2022 Young Engineer of the Year
Alyssa S. Sooklal, P.E., M.ASCE is a Water Resources Engineer with the Water Resources Engineering group of McCormick Taylor in Baltimore, MD. She has over seven years of experience in civil engineering industry. She is responsible for stormwater management, drainage design, erosion & sediment control design, stormwater management inspections, construction oversight, 1D/2D hydraulic modelling, and other duties of engineering design and construction. During the summer of 2016, she completed an engineering internship with the Highway Hydraulics Division of the Maryland State Highway Administration. Alyssa’s passion for Water Resources & Hydraulics stemmed from her experience at this internship, where she learned about the civil engineering industry from the perspective of a public entity. She earned her Bachelor of Science degree in Environmental Engineering with a secondary major in Spanish and a minor in Earth & Planetary Sciences from The Johns Hopkins University in May 2017.
Alyssa has been an active professional member since 2017, and has served on the executive board of ASCE Maryland Younger Member Group for many years, most recently as President for the 2023-2024 term. She served as the Maryland Section's Younger Member Director during the 2023-2024 term. She is the Chair of the Professional Objectives Committee of ASCE Maryland Section, and is an Eastern Region Geographic Member of ASCE National's Committee on Younger Members. She currently serves as the Secretary of the ASCE Maryland Section for the 2024-2026 terms. She was selected as the Young Civil Engineer of the Year by ASCE Maryland in 2022; the Younger Member of the Year by ASCE Region 2 in 2024; a society-level New Face of Civil Engineering by ASCE National in 2024; among other awards and honors which are noted on the ASCE Maryland Younger Member Group's page.
Alyssa is also an active member of the American Society of Highway Engineers (ASHE), where she participates in events and educational opportunities. She has served as a member of McCormick Taylor’s Charity Committee, and a leader of the company’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. Alyssa is heavily involved in her community and her church’s humanitarian efforts and volunteerism. She is a first-generation American and strongly advocates for educational justice and support through her fundraising partnership with Baltimore County Public Schools. She is a Board Member of the Education Foundation of Baltimore County Public Schools, an active volunteer in her community in northern Baltimore County, and a dedicated member of her church.
