Duties & Responsibilities

This position is an intermediate level civil engineer whose focus is on water and wastewater pipelines. A Sr. Civil Engineer has knowledge and experience to ensure good engineering practices are used. Job incumbent has wide latitude for independent decision making in using consistent and sound engineering practices. The engineer also provides guidance and training to junior engineers.

Essential Functions

• Leads professional engineers, engineering support staff and administrative personnel

• Conducts or leads the study, design and development of a variety of large, complex projects with a focus on water and wastewater pipeline design

• Leads the preparation of plans, reviews and/or prepares plans, specifications, cost estimates and contract documents for bidding and construction; reviews consultants’ and contractors’ designs

• Plans, organizes and oversees a wide range of multi-disciplinary, multi-faceted engineering activities

• Consults with various Divisions/Sections, manufacturers, suppliers, consultants and contractors, conducts complex studies and investigations; prepares reports on design, construction, maintenance and operation issues/problems of the systems and facilities infrastructure

• Leads the development/revision of or develops/revises design guidelines, criteria, standards details and specifications

• Participates in the formulation of long-range systems and facilities infrastructure monitoring/improvements projects/programs

• Performs, leads or oversees the performance of systems and facilities infrastructure inspections and tests

• Provides project management of various pipeline and facilities projects from planning and conceptual design through construction and testing

• Initiates and manages contracts to support pipeline and facilities infrastructure management programs

• Drives a vehicle to conduct WSSC Water business

Job Requirements

• Bachelor’s degree in civil or related engineering

• 3 years of progressively responsible civil, sanitary or environmental engineering experience

Job Preferences

Registration as a Professional Engineer in Maryland. If candidate possesses a PE license in another state, candidate must obtain Maryland registration within 12 months of hire or transfer
